Deep in Southern Belize, in the Toledo District, lies an amazing place. One can not spend time in the Rain Forest of Southern Belize without hearing the fascinating sounds of the Howler Monkeys (or Baboons as they are called in Belize). If you have never experienced this, at first it can sound very intimidating.
Their sounds can carry for miles, & until you get familiar with them, you may think an incredible large animal is making these howls. But as you head deeper into the bush & get to the monkey tree & see this for yourself, only then will you realize that the size of these 15 pound, approx. 2 foot tall Monkeys doesn’t seem to be in proportions with the deep, booming howls they make.
These “Baboons”, which are really Yucatan Black Howlers, Alouatta pigra, are found in evergreen & semi-deciduous forests, forest remnants along rivers & tall, secondary growth. These are shy & elusive creatures which usually creep away through the tree tops when approached & howl mainly at night.
These deep, lolling, continuous rumbling sounds occasionally are
interspersed with grunts & woofs,
